5 Things To Do in Vitosha Mountain If You Don’t Have a Car (With Directions)

1) Boyana Church

Boyana Church is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated in the forest of ‘Boyana” district, Sofia’s last urban area before  Vitosha National Park. It is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. The frescoes in the church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings.

Directions: Take metro to ‘Vitosha’ Metro Station and then Bus 64 to ‘Boyansko Khanche’

Tips: You can combine this experience with a relaxing hike in ‘Boyana’ area.


2) Hiking from ‘Aleko’ Ski Area to ‘Cherni Vrah’ (2290 m) – the summit of Vitosha Mountain

It takes about 2 hours to get to the peak and about 1 hour and 30 min to go back to ‘Aleko’. Please note that this route is only recommended in good weather conditions and with proper shoes and clothes and snow equipment during winter. It might be a good idea booking a guided trip if you don’t have any experience in the mountain.

Weekends: Take metro to ‘Vitosha’ Metro Station and then Bus 66

Weekends and Weekdays:  Take the metro to ‘Vitosha’ Metro Station and then Bus 122 to Simeonovo Lift Station (last stop) and then ‘Simeonovo’cable gondola to ‘Aleko’ (last station).


3) Dragalevtsi Monastery

Bulgarian Orthodox monastery Located within the Vitosha National Park, established in 1345. The monastery church, known as the Church of the Holy Mother of God is famous with its unique iconostasis and old frescoes.

Directions:

Weekends and Weekdays: Take metro to ‘Vitosha’ Metro Station and then Bus 93 to the last stop

Weekends: Take metro to ‘Vitosha’ Metro Station and then Bus 66 (get off at the 2nd stop) or Bus 93 (last stop)


4) Relaxing hiking at the lower parts of Vitosha National Park – Knyazhevo district – and hot spring water testing

This is all season experience. If you like hiking you can get to very interesting places and viewpoints as the Telegraph Tower ‘Kopitoto’ or ‘Golden Bridges’ stone river, starting from the last stop of Tram 5.

Directions: Get Tram 5 from The Palace Of Justice (center) to Knyajevo (last stop)


5) Skiing at ‘Aleko’Ski Area (‘Vitosha’ National Park)

‘Aleko’ is a ski area at 1900 m above sea level in ‘Vitosha’National Park. Usually, the season starts at beginning of January until the middle of April. There are a chairlift and a big slope. You can rent ski equipment at ‘Simeonovo’ Lift Station (First station)

Directions: Take the metro to ‘Vitosha’ Metro Station and then Bus 122 to Simeonovo Lift Station (last stop) and then ‘Simeonovo’ cable gondola to ‘Aleko’ (last station).
